The 2014 IRCHA Jamboree in Muncie, Indiana was AMAZING. During the event, I somehow managed to keep up with a live blog….from Monday, all the way through Saturday night. I’ll admit…I was spent by the fireworks and night fly…so that’s where I signed off. If you want to mis-spend some time at work…have a look and re-live the event!

Getting stoked for IRCHA!!!!!

Team RC Today Show Trailer Loaded – Bobby Barr

We met at Rod Reichardt’s house today and loaded the trailer. Rod, Carter and Justin Prochaska are leaving for IRCHA tomorrow morning. Kenny Sierra, James Cobb and I are leaving Tuesday afternoon. See everyone soon!

by cpo

Well… I can’t compete with the RC Today Show Trailer, but here’s what I’m taking to IRCHA…LOL!

by cpo

For those of you who are out at IRCHA already (crazy and lucky people), here is what you can expect out of the weather for the rest of the day…

by Bobby Barr

My trailer looks tiny behind Rod’s RV. Have a safe trip guys.

by cpo

Getting my transmitters ready for the trip to IRCHA. And yes, that includes my RF7 Interlink Elite TX… Just in case. I knew I kept all of these boxes for a reason.

by cpo

From Roger Whitehead: I have arrived safely at the IRCHA Jamboree site. Jacks are down and the slides are out. The picture is a view of the flight line from my site. Dave, there is still time for you to get here

by cpo

From Dan Landis:   2 days till IRCHA!!

He thought he could sneak in with the helis…

by cpo

And… We’re off to IRCHA! See you soon!

by cpo

by cpo

So close…

by cpo

That’s right, y’all!

Mostro, Soko Tool and RC Today Show Leveling Table by Bobby Barr

Leveling Table.jpgHere is a picture Justin Prochaska just sent me. While I’m working hard today, this guy is at IRCHA using my leveling table and Soko Tool to setup his Mostro! Does this mean I get to bend the sticks? :)

by cpo

This is just a raw and unedited look at what it was like to roll into IRCHA for the first time — when we arrived on Monday night. Not many people here at this point, but you can really get a sense of how massive this event is!

by cpo

Realized I didnt have any local advertisement for the blog and calendar. Quick trip to FedEx fixes that! Weather proof too!

by cpo

Don’t forget to check out the National Model Aviation Museum while you are at IRCHA. Admission is free for AMA members, and super cheap anyway for non-members. And they do have Heli stuff, LOL!

by cpo

Just drove past Bert Kammerer driving a golf cart down the road. Had to do a double take. I think I’m going to be star struck all week! LOL!

by cpo

Updated.

by cpo

This is Shannon. He’s the IRCHA Secretary. He’s working hard right ow to make sure everything is ready to go for pilot check-in tomorrow. There are over 700 preregistered pilots. Many, many more will show up tomorrow who have not pre-registered.

Thanks for the hard work, Shannon!

by cpo

Finally got to visit with Bert…

With Mr. Gary Wright, Team Thunder Tiger, goon over my Raptor E550FBL. His flight of my Heli coming later…

by cpo

Ran in to the infamous Nick Rollins!

by cpo

Gary Wright flying his Raptor 700 with an impressively low head speed. It’s very therapeutic to watch…

by cpo

just hanging out on the flight line…watching folks fly. Great fun!

by cpo

My 550 compared to Gary’s 820.

by cpo

by cpo

by cpo

What better guy to take your Heli for a test flight than the one and only Gary Wright! He had it on the bench, checking everything over for me.. Made some small adjustments to gear mesh and belt tension to suit his preference, and programmed the Castle Talon 90 ESC governor for me.   Then he took it out. One quick adjustment to up the tail gain a tad, and he was showing me how it flies… And it flies well! I still love this Heli, and can’t wait until I am capable of flying it as smoothly as he does.

by cpo

I really do love the smell of nitro! : )

by cpo

These guys are amping up the fun…

by cpo

Weather looks good for today!!

It’s hard to explain. There’s this sound that happens and everyone around recognizes it. Everyone, including you, stops conversation to see who flying. That sound… It’s a distinct sound that occurs when someone is really beating on a Heli. Very few people can create that sound… And when it happens, everyone notices. This short video isn’t “that sound” but reflects what it’s like to see someone flying, and you can’t help but stop and watch, even for just a few seconds.

by cpo

This is what it’s like to walk the midway at IRCHA. This is sped up 2x. In real time, it took over 8 minutes to walk from one end to the other… With no stops.

by cpo

It’s 3:10 AM. I can’t sleep. I’ve been laying in bed at the hotel thinking about everything I have seen and all of the people I have met over the last few days.

What a great time CJ and I are having! The honest truth is that CJ wasn’t really excited to come with me to this event. He hasn’t really embraced the heli side of RC the way I have, but came to honor my request to make this week an attempt at a father-son bonding opportunity. It is our first trip together. Just us.
How’s that working? Better than I imagined. It’s been really great for us. As you’ve likely seen, he’s been at my side almost everywhere I go. He’s having more fun than I (or he) ever imagined he would. He’s really noticed the people – the relationships. It’s not just about flying toy models. He gets the big picture. He is inspired. Not only with a desire to learn to fly helis with me… But also inspired in the building of relationship with really cool people like we have met at this event.
He’s driving me crazy to buy “us” a Goblin or a Raptor 700 or a… Yeah… Most any big heli he sees, really . :-) I can’t get him to leave me alone about it. He understands we can’t afford to buy a new heli this trip – although that didn’t stop him from trying to convince his mom over the phone that he would sell his Xbox to help pay for it.
Why does all of this matter? Because he really could have cared less about the helis before now. He started out the week doing nothing but sitting in the car and the Soko tent playing games on his phone. Now… He doesn’t want to leave the flying field… Even for food. He asked me to pull out the sim, and he’s been practicing for the last two days. What a different kid. I think he has been bit hard by that Heli bug. Many of you know exactly what I am talking about! He’s already trying to figure out how to get sponsored! LOL!
This, my friends, is the power of the IRCHA Jamboree! This is not just a fun fly. This is a life changing experience. This is where everything exciting about this hobby violently yet gracefully swirls together into a week that can change your life. This is a week we will not soon forget.
One last bit, before I try and force myself back to sleep. In particular, CJ is greatly inspired by Flyin Ryan Robertson. We have had the privedge of meeting he and his father Todd in person here at IRCHA. CJ got to watch Ryan fly, and unfortunately it was a flight where Ryan was really pushing the heli low to the deck and put it in after about 30 seconds. A lot of people see that as a crash. It was much more than that for CJ. He was inspired by that crash so much more than you could imagine. What CJ got out of that was that even someone as skilled as Ryan crashes. And it’s okay. Ryan and his dad picked up the pieces, went back to the camper, and started getting the next heli ready to fly. CJ has been reluctant to become interested in the hobby because he doesn’t want to experience failure. To him, crashing was failing. But now, he realizes crashing is GROWING. It’s learning. He is inspired by that thought, and is no longer afraid of failing.
When we were helping Ryan and Todd pick up the pieces of that crashed Goblin, we ended up with this little piece if the vertical tail stabilizer. I was going to throw it away, but CJ asked if he could keep it as a souvenir. He wanted to hold on to the feeling from that experience.
Well, we did one better than that. I had shared what I just told you with Todd, and we arranged a little surprise for CJ. Ryan signed and presented CJ with a piece of a main blade from that crash he witnessed. It’s more than a broken main blade. It’s a momento. It’s a token. It’s a turning point in the life of a 12 year old. Thank you Todd and Ryan.
Build. Fly. Crash. Repeat.
CPO
Good night. Again.

Now he’s bringing out Heli #2

by cpo

Gaui girls and boys out dancing … “I’m sexy and I know it…”

by cpo

He just changed transmitters.

by cpo

Third Heli. Changing transmitter! No. He’s flying two helicopters at once!

by cpo

One clearly set for loiter mode of some sort. Awesome still!

by cpo

Changing helis again.

by cpo

And…he’s done.

Next up is Kyle Stacy.

by cpo

Looks like he is setting up 3 helis.

by cpo

He’s starting now with his set maneuvers.

by cpo

Winner of the ONE competition gets $7000 cash.

by cpo

Bobby Watts is spotting for Kyle…

And the music drops!

To be honest, CJ and I are beat. It’s been a long week, and we have a long drive tomorrow.
This is the last post from us on the IRCHA 2014 live Blog. Thank you all, and good night!

I know I said I was done… But I wanted to share this. Not only did I get to fly a little this morning before hitting the road, but CJ actually got to do a little hovering practice at IRCHA. Very proud dad.

Watch for him next year!
