SearchRC : Custom RC Forum Search Engine

Okay.. it’s 10 minutes long. Sorry. If you think you understand, you can stop watching at any time. :-) If you want the quick rundown and want to skip the detailed features, jump to 8:25.

SearchRC can be found at http://everythingcpo.com/searchrc

This is a custom search engine that will allow you to focus your RC related searches to various RC forums – and only the forums – eliminating random search results from the rest of the Web. Sometimes I just want to find user-generated content, and the forums is the best place to find it. This is why I created CPO’s SearchRC. It relies exclusively on Google-indexed content from these sites. I don’t have any special search access. Clicking on results will take you to the site that the result comes from – in a new page so you don’t lose your results!

Here are the forums currently included in CPO’s SearchRC. Email me if you would like to add others.
3DRCForums, Flite Test, Flying Giants, Helifreak, RC Groups, RC Heli Addicts, RC Heli Nation, RC Help, RC Tech, RC Today Show, RC Universe, Run Ryder, Watt Flyer

Instructions:

Enter search term(s).

Exact Phrases: Use quotes to search for exact phrases. Example: “RC Hangar Time” will find results with only the phrase in that order. Without quotes, it will search for pages that have “RC” and “Hangar” and “Time” in any order.

AND Operator: (AND capitalized) This is the default if you type anything without quotes. You can explicitly state it as RC AND Hangar AND Time, but just typing RC Hangar Time will give you the same thing.

OR Operator: (OR capitalized) This will find pages with either one of the search terms. The page may have both, both doesn’t have. Example: cpo OR E700 will find pages with either cpo or E700, or maybe both.

Exclude Operator: (-) This will exclude pages with the keyword following the minus sign. Example: -rcgroups cpo will return results for cpo that don’t include rcgroups…it’s a good way to narrow results.

Click a button.

SearchRC: Provides search results with no time limitation, with the most relevant results presented first.

Week: Provides search results estimated to have been indexed in the last week, with the most relevant results presented first. (This isn’t perfect, because forums will often update container pages but still contain older posts or new pages that link to older posts that have titles with your keywords. There is nothing I can do about that. It’s close, though.)

Month: Provides search results estimated to have been indexed in the last month, with the most relevant results presented first. (This isn’t perfect, because forums will often update container pages but still contain older posts or new pages that link to older posts that have titles with your keywords. There is nothing I can do about that. It’s close, though.)

Year: Provides search results estimated to have been indexed in the last year, with the most relevant results presented first. (This isn’t perfect, because forums will often update container pages but still contain older posts or new pages that link to older posts that have titles with your keywords. There is nothing I can do about that. It’s close, though.)

Note: You can toggle between Week/Month/Year/All (SearchRC) whenever you want, wherever you want. It will re-run the search with the current search terms…just cycle through them if you choose. The number of results obtained is presented to show you how much the search is being limited via time restriction. It’s an estimate…so don’t place any bets on that number.

Toggle thumbnail images.

You can check the box next to “Show thumbnail pics with results (if available)?” whenever you want. It will toggle on/off the display of thumbnail images next to the results. When off, the results are just a list in text with a clickable title link to take you to the page in the result (in a new window). When on, it will present a thumbnail image that was cached as part of Google’s indexing of the page. Not all results will have an image. You can click the box at any time, on any page of results. It will just show or remove thumbnails for whatever results are already on the page. If checked, any new searches will be presented with thumbnail images.

Perform an image search only.

Checking this box will run the search for image-based results. Clicking on the image will open the full size version in a new window. Clicking the link underneath the image will take you to the page where the image was found.

Navigate forward and backward through results.

Hey CPO! Show me more! = Next Page of results. (Pages load 10 results at a time.)
